true story, this story all starts when he was a little boy (Jay) and his best friend (Leven) were playing with there dog on the cliff next to the ocean, and then Jay threw the ball to far and ended up chasing
after it which at that time a huge wave came and took him and then A man (Gerard) came to the rescue which inspired Jay to surf. Anyways, a little later as he got a little older he tried surfing but got cut trying so another little boy helped him (Jonny). So when they became teenagers all three were really good friends. Later on in the movie Jay wanted to learn how to surf but needed a older teacher so he went to Gerard for help, at first Gerard didn't want to help Jay then Jay and Gerard's wife got to him so he finally helped Jay. So after Gerard helped Jay over and over, Jay got the hang of surfing, Finally, one day Jay followed Gerard to this secret place where there is mavericks which are huge waves and wanted to ride one on the day where there was going to be the biggest wave ever, anyways at first Gerard said no but then he thought about it and finally said yes since he might do it behind his back. So when that big day came he finally got to ride that wave and ended up winning first place. At the end of the movie it shows a part of everybody that new Jay in the water throwing water up and saying "for Jay" because Jay died when he turned 21 from a maverick wave.
